Moxabustion is a traditional Chinese medicine therapy that uses the burning of mugwort to speed healing, strengthen the flow of blood, increase the flow of Qi and help maintain overall health. There are two types of moxibustion: direct and indirect. Direct uses either a small cone or “rice grain” moxa and is placed directly on the skin or other herbs and burned. It is extinguished before it burns the skin. Indirect moxa incorporates moxa sticks, moxa boxes and needle moxa where the moxa is lit but never touches the skin. Moxabustion is used to ease menstrual problems, and in cold or stagnant conditions.
